Chapter Eleven

Rina grinned and waved as her friends drove off. She could only imagine what Sam would tell her husband about where she'd been. The three of them had spent the entire evening acting like teenagers again, and Rina was almost sad it was over.

But her friends had responsibilities. Though Sam's youngest and Alex's daughter were both eighteen, they still had to be mothers. And while Alex was long divorced, Sam also had a husband at home who was bound to be waiting for answers.

As the taillights of Alex's silver Honda faded into the darkness, Rina let out a sigh and shook her head. She could only imagine what her own sons would have said if they'd been there to witness their mother coming home smelling like a combination of booze, salt water, and fish tacos.

She was about to turn toward the house and head inside when she heard a noise in the distance. It was like a dull thudding sound, followed by what sounded like muttered cursing. Holly hadn't mentioned anything about someone working late tonight, but then Holly hadn't exactly shared the ins and outs of the Archer Inn with her either. After all, she was only here for the party, and she didn't need to be clued into the exact inner workings.

Still, though, she couldn't just walk away and ignore the sound. This was her family home, after all. If someone was sneaking around who shouldn't have been, Rina wanted to know about it. More than that, she was going to put a stop to it. Islamorada didn't have much crime—at least it hadn't when she had lived there—but there were always outliers or bored teenagers getting into trouble.

Either way, Rina was ready to put a stop to whoever was causing that commotion.

Making her way toward the beach with all the bravado the last remnants of her margaritas could provide, Rina felt as if she were walking on air. It didn't take long before the location of the noise was in sight—the boathouse sitting at the base of the dock. A single man was out there, moving boxes from the boathouse to the back of a large speed boat.

Rina frowned and picked up the pace. If someone thought they could just waltz onto Archer property and make away with supplies, they were about to get a bit of a surprise. But as she came closer, she recognized the man. She couldn't remember his name to save her life, but he had been one of the workers at the dock Randy had introduced her to when she'd first shown up.

He froze in his spot when he caught sight of her. Then he must've realized who it was. He continued on his journey, sliding the cargo into the back of the boat with a handful of others. "Rina, right?" he asked as he dusted his hands on his pants.

Rina nodded as she ran her gaze up and down the man. He was dressed much as he had been at the docks, dirty coveralls and an even dirtier T-shirt.
